Ur right. League or the odd cup game is the chance to view. Surely each club will be advised of agenda of PG meetings. Do you not have a meeting b4hand to discuss the agenda?? Selection is a totally thankless task but if u want them to go around watching league games then they would have to rule themselves out of club games. Can't see the current group willing to do that!! As I say, PG comps is an option and not just the semi final stages.

Docholiday That's why someone should go 2 selector(s) and promote these players when ur club plays them. Word of mouth can be very effective and there are plenty of people around who are very effectives orators!!!!!! Why not say choose a team to play Irish U25 side to give them a practice b4 British Isles, u could then give those outside the top 5 clubs a chance to show wot they can do??

Santa. Anything that helps improves our pgl outlook is what many people in our association wants, finishing 3rd from 4 isn't very good something must be done that's for sure..... Some years ago I played on a team 2 weeks before trial squads were named, we were playing against a team with a selector on our rink our lead had an outstanding game which he had been doing all that season long our lead totally outplayed the lead that he was playing against when thegamewas over that selector was heard to say to his lead"you had an off day " there was no mention that our young lad had outplayed him and the kidnever even got a trial. The lad hasn't thrown a bowl since.

Doc, I can understand ur frustration, but....The trial teams are picked on mainly "last seasons form"..They are picked only a couple of games into the season so to say ur lead had been outstanding for the WHOLE of that season, what u actually mean is..the guy had a few good games..I won the Irish 4's and didn't get a PGL trial..Terry Mulholland won the British Isles 4's and didn't get a PGL trial..What exactly did ur lead win??..and to give up bowls because he wasn't selected on the PGL trial team after 1 good game against a selector, seems strange to me..I was told years ago, when I thought I was good enough to be selected.."Go and win something"..I did and it made no difference..In fact..To get on the International Team Indoors..I had to embarrass the selectors into picking me by winning 3 Irish titles in 2 years, when players who have never won anything walk on to the team.

Boydie - As you well know "if your face fits". There are players in the current crop who if they were playing elsewhere wouldn't even feature. Young players are actively encouraged to go to the bigger clubs in hope of recognition. I dread to think how many have just dwindled away from the sport if their dreams don't happen. 99% of current bowlers in the PGL won't be recognised outside their own clubs so maybe that would go someway to explaining the apathy shown to inter-assoc tournaments. Reckon if you asked many bowlers who are the selectors for PGL and Irish teams they could not name any because they have been ignored as clubs for so long that they no longer care.

I know only too well about the "if ur face fits" thing..I think the PGL problem is ..Complaicancy(spelling maybe not right)..Too many players Know they will be picked regardless of form and even if they don't perform at the series, they will still be picked the following year. The results over the last 5 years show that a few changes are not what's needed..A complete OVERHAUL is required and rebuild for the future...if it doesn't work..so what...The current system isn't working..

Hi boydie, my point about the young lad was he had been playing for about 3 years practicing 3 nights per week and really enjoying about bowls, too hear as we all did that day your opponent being told "bad lucky you just had an off day"was in my view embarrassing to say the least. Many years ago I was taught the game and etiquette by the Craig brother Marcus and Jim , that's not a comment that should have been said. On the matter on winning pgl titles not everyone would have the time to participate in them but I do agree with you that surely any of our bowlers who do win a pgl competition should without doubt be automatically picked by the pgl.ok the pgl team is chosen on the previous years performances well we all can see there was t many changes from last year so nothing learnt there then.

There have been some change in PG selectors recently. SWAMPIES now have a settled group of young(ish) selectors and it is paying dividends. Modern game totally different now. Not sure if there are guys like the Craig's around anymore who are willing to mentor young players.

Not sure if there are guys like the Craig's around anymore who are willing to mentor young players. Yes Santa the Craig brothers were 2 gentlemen, I lead for Marcus for 2 years in senior 1 until one week he told me the time has come so he moved me to 3 rd on his rink, don't mind telling you but I was bricking it the confidence the man gave me was unbelievable. On selection it's a really hard task for anyone as I later found out but I've learnt over the years all selectors try their best and it's sometimes not appreciated. As far as our pgl team goes I've no doubt everyone does their utmost , that's all you can ask. Would just like to congratulate all those from our associations the best of luck in the British isles championships and hopefully they can do the business. No matter what association they play for it's our team so let's all our clubs give them 100 per cent backing. Best of luck boys.
