Passed Owenbeg bowling club today and very sad to see a once thriving club no longer in existence. The green itself is badly overgrown with weeds and the clubhouse looks badly neglected. What a shame that this was allowed to happen. Is there even an indoor club?

Ofcourse it is sad that any bowling club has to fold as it is a stark illustration as to how the game is declining. However, I dare say that the green will be infinitely more playable in its current state than it ever was!!!! #backgarden #ploughedfield

I Disagree with that. The green was not perfect but it definitely was not the worst green in the pgl or irish bowls for that matter. At least you could play on it both ways unlike some other green nearby.

Always found Dromore green well maintained Not the worst green in Irish bowls. Shame on whoever criticised it and had probably never played there.

Any time I played Dromore it was fine. Was the comment about it made on another board? I have not seen it referred to on here.

It seems a pity Downpatrick and Owenbeg could not but should have merged, certainly Owenbeg had the better facilities both in clubhouse and green.the nature of the game today shows there is no room for 2 clubs so close together in a small town like Downpatrick. there are other clubs in Belfast within 500 yards of each other who are struggling to compete but pride or possible loss of identity means they will never get together.

Some SWAMPIES clubs who played on same green would not merge. Though it did happen at Woodvale Park a while back.

Not sure if it's true but someone told me this week that Owenbeg had offered their facilities to Downpatrick when they packed up but the offer was declined. Could just be Chinese whispers though.

Yes I heard that one as well together with the Cricket Club offering them space to. Can understand why they Downpatrick might not want to lose their own identity but might work out better in the long run. The last time I played on the Downpatrick green it was up the hill and down the hill

Bornagain I'm not to sure what the relevancy of my comment on Owenbegs green is to encouraging or not people taking up bowls?? I think if you ask the majority of bowlers they will agree. It was simply a crap green.
If you disagree that's fine as it's your perogative the same way that anyone can have an opinion on anything aslong as it can be substantiated.
Btw I detest aliases! Just my opinion and if you need that quantified let me know.
